Roads and Gritting - 16 February 2010  Back to top

West Sussex and East Sussex County Councils are responsible for the gritting of roads and footpaths in our area. The priority is to keep all major routes treated and passable. This means all A roads, most B roads and other important roads such as access roads to hospitals. Maypole Road, Hammerwood Road (as far as Maypole Road) and Wall Hill Road are usually treated. Most other roads in the village will not be treated and we have been advised by the County Council that there is little prospect of adding roads to the current route. Mid Sussex District Council is responsible for gritting and clearing its car parks.

The Parish Council owns several Grit Bins. These are located around the village, often where the road is steep or there is a sharp bend, and are refilled for us by the County Council. Unfortunately all are now empty and we do not know when they will be refilled as grit supplies are currently regulated by the Government. Please note that the bins are there for the benefit of the community and may be used to help clear roads and paths that would not otherwise be treated. Taking grit to use on private land (other than in a genuine emergency) is not permitted.

Affordable Housing Update December 2009  Back to top

Plans to build eight affordable homes in Maypole Road, Ashurst Wood have fallen through following the decision of the landowner to withdraw from the project.

The scheme was supported by the Parish Council and would have provided rental and shared ownership low cost housing for local people. A number of residents had indicated an interest in applying for accommodation.

The Parish Council will continue to work with English Rural Housing, Action in Rural Sussex and Mid Sussex District Council to identify a suitable site for much-needed affordable housing for people with a connection to the village.

Japanese Knotweed      Back to top
Japanese Knotweed is EXTREMELY difficult to eradicate and the chances of 1 spray with herbicide are very unlikely to eradiJapanese Knotweed cate it.  On a well established site such as this it could take 5 or more years to be clear. Any interference with the plant makes eradication more unlikely. The underground resources of this plant can be vast and the more smaller and broken stems there are the harder it is to eradicate.
The West Sussex Ranger- Mike Funnell has records of all the sites he has dealt with and even after not finding a plant for a year or more - and he carries out a thorough search - he has known it to regrow. On sites where he thinks he has eradicated it using roundup these have been sites where it has not has had any disturbance.
Please report new sites to the Ranger or Parish Clerk. Ashurst Wood and the border with East Grinstead is one of the more heavily infested areas of the County. The Ranger has not managed to completely eradicate it from Forest Way yet!  If it is growing on highway land please report to West Sussex County Council Highways.

Village of the year photoCalor Village of the Year Competition 2008     Back to top
The Parish Council is delighted to announce that Ashurst Wood won the runners-up prize in its category (villages in west Sussex with 1000 to 5000 residents) in the Calor Village of the Year competition. This is an excellent result as it was the first time the village has entered the competition. The judges looked at how various community groups, clubs and organisations work together to make the village a pleasant and caring place to live. Thanks must therefore go to all the volunteers in the village, including members of St Dunstan’s church, the Trustees of the Village Centre and the Pre-school, whose hard work helped in achieving this award.
